Starting June 19, 2026, a clearly visible electronic cancellation function—the so-called "cancellation button"—will become mandatory by law in Germany for many consumer contracts concluded online.

This new regulation stems from the implementation of EU Directive 2023/2673 into the new Section 356a of the German Civil Code (BGB). The aim is to make cancelling online contracts just as easy as the quick click used to conclude them.

The requirement applies to all companies and online retailers in the B2C sector that enable consumers to conclude contracts for goods, services, or financial products via their online interfaces (websites or apps).
